Frigolitslalom
Frigolitslalom – From childhood fun to digital game
Step into the world of Frigolitslalom, a thrilling slalom game inspired by a childhood invention. Born from the simplicity of a styrofoam board, toothpick gates, and a metal marble, this game challenges your skill and precision as you tilt and steer through gates to achieve the fastest time. Reimagined for the digital age, Frigolitslalom combines nostalgic charm with modern gameplay, delivering an experience that’s as fun and competitive as the original. Are you ready to race against the clock and master the tilt?
Background
Back in the 80s as a young teenager I was really into board games and playing with my friends. I also invented and created some simple games myself, some better than the others. But the one game that really stood out and was super fun to play was Frigolitslalom.
This was during the time when the legendary ski racer Ingemar Stenmark was competing and me and my family watched all his races. I had posters of Ingemar on the walls in my room and was a really big fan of the alpine sports. I can’t remember exactly when I got the idea for Frigolitslalom but it was during this time.
When playing the game with my friends we always played as real skiers like Pirmin Zurbriggen, Steve and Phil Mahre, Alberto Tomba, Piero Gros and all the other legends of the time. I remember how nervous we were when one of us was Ingemar and we needed a really good run for him to win.
I’ve also been playing the original Frigolitslalom in recent years. Me and some of my childhood friends still meet up over a weekend and play games together and most of the times Frigolitslalom is on the list of games we play.
The digital version
When I finished developing my first mobile game, Space Exposures, I’ve started to think about what my next game would be. The idea of making a mobile version of Frigolitslalom came to me during the fall of 2024 and I started to do some simple game tests to see how I could mimic the physics from the real game to a digital version. It turned out that using the phone for tilt and roll to control the ball was actually quite similar to the feeling I had playing the actual game, so that made me convinced it could work and be a fun game to play.
I started by designing the 3D graphics in Blender and then transferred it Xcode. I spent a lot of time fine tuning the ball physics to get the right feel for how fast the ball should move and react to movements etc. I ‘ve also included a global high score list since a game like this is all about going fast and comparing your time against others.
As for all the tracks, there is a total of 81 tracks in the game grouped into 9 levels each having 9 tracks. As you increase the level more gates are added to make the game more challenging.
Here are some of the game features:
- Total of 81 tracks. Higher levels have a higher number of gates which makes the game more challenging.
- View replays of your personal records.
- Record time indicator while racing. A horizontal line indicates you personal record pace for each track while racing.
- Change the color of your ball.

v1.3
Version 1.3 adds new features that make Frigolitslalom more fun and competitive. The biggest addition is a global leaderboard. To appear on the leaderboard, you need to create an account with Sign in with Apple. Once you do, your best times on each track can be submitted to the global leaderboard. You can still play as a guest, but guest times are stored locally and are not submitted to the leaderboard.
A new world record line has also been added during gameplay. There are now two record lines: one for your personal record (PR) and one for the world record (WR).
Version 1.3 also includes minor bug fixes and performance improvements.
Below are some screen shots and a movie showing what the game looks like.
